After a few more years, however, Buttaro would very slowly become interested in the business, thanks to Tone Zone president Gary Byron. Buttaro continues, “I dated, then eventually married Gary’s cousin, and for one year we lived with him.  If you don’t know anything about Gary, he eats, drinks, sleeps this industry.  Back in the late eighties, DJ equipment was anything but compact, and extremely heavy so Gary needed my help as a roadie.  Sometimes I’d stay and assist him, so I’d be watching him too.  If he needed to emcee something on the floor, I’d play the music. I guess this is how I became a DJ.”

But it was much more than filling-in that led to Buttaro’s success. Byron comments, ”What ended up happening was that his skill as a DJ eventually became better than mine. But that allowed me to concentrate on getting the

crowd going. I packaged and marketed us as a duo.  He’d be the DJ and I’d be the emcee- slash – entertainer. It’s a bit passé now but back in the nineties that duo DJ entertainer package brought us bookings by the hundreds!”

The duo’s success ultimately led to Buttaro’s burnout.  Buttaro says, “We were doing over a hundred weddings a year! In the late nineties I told Gary I needed to take a year off to recoup.  Well one year led to two, then three, and by the time I wanted to get back out there- in the early part of this decade, the ‘dual DJ’ package was out of style, which caused Gary to work as a solo DJ.”  Byron picks up from here, ”Joe already had the personality, the experience and a high level of professionalism so I kept insisting he go out and make the necessary equipment purchases because remember back when we

worked asa duo he’d be using mine.  He has such an aim to please/ whatever it takes philosophy that people would call and specifically ask for him to be their DJ. Of course nowadays Joe does work as a solo DJ and gets requested on a daily basis.  I wish I could clone him!” Buttaro concludes, “Yeah, Gary has high standards with Tone Zone. That’s good to have especially when there are more ‘cookie-cutter’ DJs out there than ever before.  But in ’04 I eventually caved in and finally bought my own equipment and here I am.  It’s like I never left.  I was so humbled to learn of my popularity even during my three year break.  I knew clients liked me but I never imagined the amount of people who’d call and ask for me to be their DJ.  I am so honored! And ya know what? I’m happier than ever! I know Tone Zone is where I belong – I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.” Buttaro’s long tenure as a ...
Growing up in New Britain, CT, Joe Buttaro was always a music aficionado, he just never knew that one day he’d become one of Connecticut’s most popular disc-jockeys.  Buttaro says “I was into music-all kinds of music, since I can remember.  I’d scan the radio dial and not only know the song each station was playing, but I knew who performed them.  I have to admit, being a disc-jockey wasn’t ever a thought, though.  Actually, in my early twenties I worked in a clothing store with a DJ.  He was so impressed with my musical knowledge, he offered to pay me to train as a DJ and then work for him, but I declined.”
